Shopping while Black : Another social experiment

What would you do?...

It's interesting.. some people did to be fair.. but most people didn't do or say anything... it's not just 'bystander apathy'

One guy actually said something about the shopper probably .. "playing the Black card".. aka 'the race card'.. while his girlfriend, who 'didn't see or hear anything':) said nothing.. (didn't even look around)

Before you all think..this is out of date ( true it's an oldish vid).. the last time I was trailed in a shop was early October 2011, in Croydon... didn't look suspicious.. and just so you know how messed up this has become.. the security guard was black

on another note.. an amusing bit was when the security guard said .. " what do I need Ebonics!?!"... the script writer had a sense of humour

  1. society ey? I remember intervening back in 95 when this young black guy was being harassed by these Asian shop keepers down oxford street. They were forcefully trying to search his bag saying he had shop lifted. When I challenged them they said he had opened his bag in the shop. I was like huh? that all? when does it become a crime to open one's bag in a shop. We both gave them a really bad day

As the years went by started to notice it were eyes and cameras focus on you, and the poor customer service offered to you. shameless profiling

  2. thankfully that day didn't end with the two of you ( despite being innocent) being wrestled to the ground, handcuffed and carted off by the cops ( as in the case of a guy that took a group of kids to an amusement park earlier in the year!)
I do hope that anyone who 'wasn't aware' that may stumble across this post, has a better understanding..

There are incidents where.. unless something is actually 'said', i suspect there are people who don't even realise it's happening to them.. then there are those who accept it as 'part of life'

Hmmm. not one we should readily accept in my book
    In short.. it's not cool!!

  3. KMT as usual nothing changed there social experiment where is the fun in being followed around in a shop...if you think thats your shadow you then take another look, he/she is 6foot dressed in a uniform with a walkie talk for backup...

Shame huh for those who can or cannot afford, it really is uncool to be trailed as though you walk into a shop with criminal intent and historic as it maybe we still haven't moved with the times...

I remember when my daughter was little and even now for fear of being called back by security, I always used to do a final buggy check, kid check before waltzing out of a shop....wouldn't want to be the black woman whose bags beeped because her kid picked up a bar of chocolate by accident!!!!....

Thank goodness have never encountered that kinda senario!!!

  4. To this day I sometimes wave my bag before the 'detector ' as I leave, because.. it has happened to me on about 3 occasions where the h'eejit ( I was so embarrassed i wanted to clart somebody down:)).. or should I just say forgetful sales asst 'forgot' to take all the tags off.. it happened once in Top Shop Oxford St ( of all places) in full view of h'everybody.. guy going through my bag..

even though I showed him the reciept for every item... well.. strip me naked and tar me with feathers why don't cha!! sheeet..
when he realised the mistake he tried to be nice.. he was nice, keeping it calm

And you know what made me feel more embarrassed?... well... you know.. just as i know what some folk must have been thinking..

All sales asst's ..pur-lease.. the tags!!.. mistakes like that are a big no no for some of us..

  5. Interesting, very interesting.

Happens to me all the time. It's fascinating for other people, but I live this shit everyday.
