Young Disciples

You can't plan for everything.. sometimes.. things just happen

Some days are filled with surprises
Some good some bad
This evening was a mixed bag.
After I got in, I heard of some really bad/sad news, then later on.. you know that that nice warm feeling you get when you make a new friend?.. I got that

I had a lovely day yesterday
When I think back to it, I smile
The on going reminder that life is full of surprises

I used to sing this over and over after I first heard it.. even before I knew the name of the singer. I had no idea what she was really singing about either.. it just sounded heartfelt.

I have one album by the Brand New Heavies..it has this track on it

But my favourite version has always been

Now.. I bet you didn't expect this track to be here did you? see.. surprises.

Or this..
It's a beautiful song

Hot steppers today ft Capleton Fantan Mojah & Luciano

Okay, so Fantan made me laugh this week, and danced his way into my heart, Luci has long since loved the 'dressing up box', switching his appearance from Chinaman to Colonial explorer back to Rastaman..and Capleton will always be the 'Fireman' amidst this..they state thier video case.. on top the Pyramids..which can only mean one thing...
Hot Tune!!

Remember this?..
Used to be hot hot hot, with that cool bass line

But it was that Medley of stars..that I loved most...calling Morgan heritage+
My top line was..
'love is the only solution .. can stop a revolution, Just free da mediation.. from war an illusion..'
then straight into M.H.. sweet

Reggae Britannia [documentary]

on David Rodigan

David Rodigan and Reggae
Go together like custard and cake
His name has become synonymous with Reggae

Time for the interviewer, to be interviewed. A documentary which really goes beyond his music persona, to the man himself

Why has David spent the majority of his career championing Reggae music. Very few people know Reggae music history like him.
(My brother comes close)
A connoisseur.
This White guy from Oxford, who some would say transcended race and class.
But did he?

Rodigan is a nice guy. I like him. he is much loved, and respected
Maybe I should do it.
Yes, i'd like that.

Dream Encounters

A good morning to all
Rather out of the blue I had a dream about Hosni Mubarak - the former Egyptian President
and he's not a person I think of at all

I dreamt I met him whilst I was out and about, and we chatted. He was friendly and amenable, and had quite alot to say.
I remember wanting to get a picture as proof I'd met him, and he agreed for me to film him on my phone.
I asked him a question or two, then he began to get restless and distracted, as he was being called elsewhere. I was able to get a final picture of him, he tapped my name and number in his phone and then he walked on

He looked different in my dream
I wonder if there is any meaning to that..

Mid week melody - It's Diamond

Good morning.
I'm feeling kinda tired today, but hoping to feel rejuvenated soon

Diamond has a nice voice
I've not heard him before..I take it he's from Tanzania

**

**

I dont know what he's saying here, but I translate to something like...

'Don't worry my darling.. things will get better soon I promise!. All those things I promised you when we got married, they will come.. by gods grace.. and my hard work. Please don't leave me for that other guy.. you know.. the rich Nigerian one who didn't lie about his fortunes.. stay with me.. our love is strong and we can overcome all things..you are the most beautiful girl in the world.. and every day i will tell you so..'

then later she says..

'Uhuh.. yet everyday I go hungry!..
Yeah, i'll stick with you a few months more, but if things don't get better.. I have to be honest Joe.. I'll be heading back to my parents home.. and hope they help me find a new man!'.
I wont lie.. I'm fed up of this shit.. your crops failing an shit.. year after year they fail...whilst the neighbour's corn grows big and strong!. No.. until you start earning, they've be no more love making, and believe me when I say, I have a passport on standby, and my good friend Dawna sent me an Oyster card for when I get to London
I'm loyal.. yeah, but I've got to think about what's best for me..just like you did'.. lol!!

Then.. after she left.. he headed for the bar, and fell in love with the barman

Okay..I really need to get to work don't I.. :)

I found this a difficult watch.

*** Culinary delights.. What's on Mondays Menu?

I think that whoever is home, should cook.
Or.. whoever, gets home first.. should cook ( or set the scene for the Chef de Partie aka .. moi )

I cooked enough yesterday to provide dinner for today.. but it didn't last.
In fact it got eaten last night, and I've now got a moody looking Ti upstairs saying I need to cook food for my 'children'

I very quickly reminded him how old he is, and that as he was home today, (as he's on holiday) he should have done the cooking. I was determined not to cook, but it's bugging me, to the point that I'm going to do it.. I know I will.

Really , I just want to unwind, try and get some reading done, and not cook
Just another one of the joys of being a woman right?.. you get to do everything.. even when you're tierd.

Oh hang on.. I hear movement in kitchen land.. could it be!?.. dare I hope?? :0

I've told my boys that a man who can cook is an asset to his partner. It's not cute to hear a grown man say he can't cook. Unless he really is cute... and even then.. it's best to learn

No.. I've decided..I'll let him do it tonight

**

Have you ever noticed how love travels?
How formless it is
It tends to go anywhere
If you let it

Those who are afraid to love bore me.
What a tiresome way to be
After all..what else is there?

One of the joys of loving deeply I guess include being able to resonate with, and feel every bit of this song..beautiful

Pl-eace do me a favour

I only saw this advert today, and I though it was outrageous.
A blatant display of American and British Imperialism.

Love Song

Ciara Body Party & Rick Ross ft Jay Z

This song has really grown on me..
Still..I'm in a relaxed frame of mind

**

I was trying to find a Rick Ross song without too much cursing or use of the N word. ( I couldn't ) I was trying to find one that I liked.. to get a feel for, and understand his current mega popularity, and mega sales

I've heard this a few times, and find Jay Z's verse interesting .. why? because he has been accused ( ..him and Beyonce, Kanye..) of being members of the illuminati (or lluminati) many many times ( I think that means different things to different people)

Anyway.. this video kinda messes with you on many levels. Interesting

and here he is..

Sunny Sunday

There were lots of people out running this morning. Sometimes it's a little quiet out, but not today. which was nice

I tried a kickboxing workout. and discovered my coordination was so whack lol
It's odd because I think It's fair to say I feel have rhythm ordinarily, and I reckon I could hold my own in a fist fight (..may I never need to!) so kickboxing should have been a doddle...

But it wasn't
I couldn't go up against an Ali that's for sure..not flailing about like that anyway.

I absolutely love to see men in this particular jacket. Basically.. I love Tweed jackets

Should Britain pay former colonies reparations for Slavery? Should the French.. others etc?
A discussion on the BBC made me feel a little hot... Grrrr

A white guy very flippantly stated ( Hmmm..I say flippant as that describes his tone of voice, facial expression and overall body language ) that we're all descended from Slavery.. 'quite frankly' he said ( sounding a little too much like Michael Gove when his testosterone's up..which aided my discomfort! ) ..'we're all in this together'. He said Britain was different .. in a good way. If it was okay to say ..' oh shut up you silly cow'.. I think he may have said that, but he did it in his own way. The woman in favour of reparations was marginalized, almost ridiculed. ( but to her credit.. she held her own.. told him he was falsifying history.. and he.. calmed down)

It's a sensitive issue, as shortly after that a black woman also began shouting her down. Said her dad was a millionaire, and slavery or being black..didn't stop him. (internal cultural racism)

The debate makes many uncomfortable. Talking about racism, makes many feel uneasy to be fair... black and white. The same black woman implied reparations are not needed as we have 'black history month'.. we must work on 'ourselves' like her millionaire father did. The man ( who reminded me of Gove) who spoke earlier said we in the UK, fought for everyone to be treated the same..equally under the law, and is horrified to hear the reparations lady wants to be treated differently.

A UK Law firm has taken the case, the same Law firm that won the case for Kenyan Mau Mau survivors.. so it'll be interesting to see how that pans out.

What do I think?
To be honest I'm not sure.. i'm undecided
I know that many British Aristocrats gained their wealth through the African slave trade. 'Our' stately homes have history. Wealth , (like poverty) is often inter-generational, so yes she is correct in stating that many people who are considered great and good (white British) , gained a foot up from ill-gotten gains...like the drug dealer turned 'above the law' business man.
It's a complex issue.
I see many sides to this
The advocate spoke briefly about post traumatic slave syndrome, but then stated very clearly that it's not about victim hood, but about being honest about the ways in which this fairly recent history has shaped and continues to shape lives..globally.

Now.. a cup of tea, then out in the garden.
Yes, it's time to prepare the ground.. grass seeds.. are going in

Have a nice day x

TD Jakes - On Men and relationships

Every so often I'll listen to, watch, or read a book by TD Jakes
He's an interesting man.
I didn't set out to watch him this evening but as I began to watch I became more interested in hearing what else he had to share and say to a room full of men.

This is an old video as he's much younger here, and his style has matured and evolved since..( and some of his views may also have changed) but as old as it is, its one I've never seen.

Jakes is Christian, so that's his approach, which wont appeal to all.. but it's interesting nonetheless.

Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes - Congo Brazzaville

The Society for the Advancement of Elegant People

**

The SAPE -- the Societe des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Elegantes, which loosely translates as the Society of Tastemakers, or Atmosphere Setters and Elegant People -- was born in neighbouring Congo-Brazzaville in the 1960s. But the roots of the African dandy tradition can be traced back to colonial times when locals first encountered elegant European styles.
The "sapeurs" initial idea was to sport clothes, shoes and accessories designed by the world's most venerated couturiers, the likes of Gaultier, Vuitton, Cerruti, Versace, Yamamoto, Miyake, Weston and Dolce&Gabbana.

But the dandies in the DR Congo have gone decidedly eccentric. - 'Clothes are living creatures'

[click]

**

In the capital Kinshasa, where many of the 10 million residents earn barely enough to survive, thousands of confirmed or would-be "sapeurs" strut their stuff in hand-me-downs that often came from the Congolese diaspora, according to the artists' collective Sadi. But many expats are also struggling financially and can no longer fund the tastes of those back home, said art historian Lydia Nsambayi of the ISAM institute for applied arts in Kinshasa.

"So when the 'sapeurs' realised they could not maintain their lifestyle, they bought the brands in thrift shops or mixed their own creations with Yamamoto, for example." Some turned to ready-to-wear, such as Spain's successful clothing and accessories retailer Zara. Others created their own line, like Mbengi with his "100% Paper" brand or Bwapwa Kumeso, who in 2009 created "Kadhitoza", or "The Beautiful Creature" in the language of the Chokwe ethnic group which is spoken in the country's south.

the Gentrified beard

In the land of the Gentry.. things are a changing

Hackney , Shoreditch, Hoxton
The status symbol right now sems to be...
The Beard.
( but don't worry.. I have no intention of wearing one!)

Exactly what is 'the Beard', trying to say to us.. what's the meaning behind this phenonmena?

Male grooming products are big business and menswear is outselling women’s departments.
More and more men are growing beards, and spending more time and money on their appearance

Walking in today almost every other man I passed..had a beard.

It’s official. Beards are back. The Beard, is in fashion

Not so long ago, men were advised to rid themselves of facial hair. Clean shaven was the sign of respectability ( although I never bought in to that)
There was a time when Politicians also, were advised not to sport facial hair, as they felt it made them look shifty and untrustworthy. Unwashed.

Political eyebrows were allowed to grow the thickness of s small beard though. I wonder if that view has changed.

Any male who wanted to climb the career ladder, seemed to grab the razor, and keep their hair short and trim.. short back and side- mum's spit neat.
Not anymore.

Seems a bit of rough can climb the ladder after all. Perhaps it’s not appearance, but content of character, and ability that matters after all

I'm not really into beards though, and I'm definitely not into moustaches ( not ideal for kissing)

But again... this trend allows us women to relax and laugh, knowing that there is really little difference.. as men..yeah.. they follow fashion, just like us girls.

Were you happy today?

Today , is ( or was ) the UN International Day of Happiness [click]

Speaking at the High Level Meeting on "Happiness and Well-Being: Defining a New Economic Paradigm" convened during the sixty-sixth session of the General Assembly the Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stated that the world “needs a new economic paradigm that recognizes the parity between the three pillars of sustainable development. Social, economic and environmental well-being are indivisible. Together they define gross global happiness.” The meeting was convened at an initiative of Bhutan, a country which recognized the supremacy of national happiness over national income since the early 1970s and famously adopted the goal of Gross National Happiness over Gross National Product.

So did you have a happy day?
I wonder...what makes you happy?.

Only yesterday I was told that you cannot make anyone happy, that some folk are bitter, and in fact enjoy thier misery
That can't be true can it?
Nah.. I reckon everyone wants to feel something akin to happiness. It doesnt have to be jump up and down happy, but just.. well..okay.

So.. for your reading pleasure, I have a few jokes that I hope will put a smile on your chops this evening.. even if it's just one joke, tickling just one chop.
If not.. I need to find some better jokes!

Are you ready?.. here goes..

"How many tickles does it take to make an octopus laugh?"
... "Ten tickles".

"Two aerials met on a roof. They fell in love and got married. The ceremony was rubbish - but the reception was brilliant!" heehee

"Why was the horse so happy?"
... "Because he lived in a stable environment"

"Confucius.. he say: 'man who seduces virgin on hillside... not on the level'."

**

Apparently, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement;
“The pursuit of happiness lies at the core of human endeavors. People around the world aspire to lead happy and fulfilling lives free from fear and want.”

Nice goal right?
Well I certainly hope you enjoyed what was also .. the 1st day of Spring :)

Music maestro's please..Gallardo ft. Davido

Miss Rwanda 2014

When I think of Rwanda this is not the kind of thing I think of. For some reason I still think of that terrible Genocide.
This event feels very dated to me. Perhaps it's the terrible choice of song by Cliff Richard! that puts me off

The song I do like though, is the song that accompanies the fine display of cars as they roll up. if anyone knows the name of that track feel free to let me know ( sounds kinda cool)

Questions begin at 7.46 Why do we need girl empowerment? Hmmm (so you stop rolling us out like this!. heehee) and include What's the role of small and medium enterprise in the country?, and, Why should we conserve our culture? ( that's an interesting question given the history) What's the role of the Private sector is also interesting

What is Rwandan culture? I wonder. Rwandas themselves are a mixture of people from surrounding countries, and this European flavoured event, final song choice wonderful imported cars, bit of music from Nigeria, all lead me to believe that it is shifting and reshaping itself all the time, a diverse global mix ( even if many of the girls look similar .. can I say that!?!)

Hmmm... perhaps If I was a woman living in Rwanda, I'd be hoping I could get up there myself. Depending on what my choices were.
But you see, that's the thing. Perhaps I have an outdated perception of Rwanda.. or at least skewed towards war and conflict

It's also our 'Budget day'.. this has provided a nice early distraction from whatever Mr Osbourne has up his sleeve. How much do you reckon there'll be some sweeteners in there for middle income earners and parents of young children? There's an election looming after all. I haven't heard it yet but Booooooooooooooo.. :)
Enjoy your day

I set out to type Just do you, (the title of the song) but instead it came out as Just do It.
I liked it, so I left it

Good morning :)

Whilst waiting for a new season of the web series Awkward Black Girl ( Love it ) , this was brought to my attention

Interesting. really long credits at the end though
Hmmm I'll give it a try although I don't usually do that possessed stuff ( but they've put a different spin on it - taken it to the Ancients, taken it to Kemet) without giving it away.. he's a God

Gotta catch the rest later

As I sit.. I think for a moment

There is something about certain songs that cause me to sit back and reflect.
Cottage in Negril is one such song.
I remember it being sung by Tyrone Taylor in the 80's. Sadly Tyrone may no longer be with us, but his song is firmly fixed in my memory. I'm pretty sure it spent weeks on the Reggae charts at No 1, if not, it certainly received a great deal of airplay, and was on the playlist of most DJ's, David Rodigan and many others

Duane Stephenson, has done a great job.

I realized today that when I'm in my garden I'm very happy. I'm very content planting things, and being outside. It was a nice day despite my cold.
As I relax to this song ( Cottage in Negril) I realize also that this week will be my last taught lecture of my MA. How I feel about that I can't yet articulate
But after this week, I'll be writing up my final assignment and working on my dissertation.
The past two years have flown by.

My last lecture will be on Whiteness. Should I be cheeky and ask my lecturer with a wry smile if she saved the best til last?:)
In the arena of Post-colonial studies an' all..I'm sure she'll get the joke.

I've had many late nights, fallen asleep mid read often, and will continue to for awhile yet, but.. I've enjoyed every minute.
I guess it's almost time to bring it all together and bring it home.
Not long now, but there's much to do first.

Sunshine! and Lutan Fyah

Tu'n it up

One, Two, Three

Apparently... Jamaica has the most churches per square mile than any other country.[click]
A very moral country
Christian - predominantly
Even Rastafari is rooted in Orthodox Christianity, focusing primarily on the old testament, and Revelations of course.

This 'morality ' spills over into everyday life. Belief systems are precious, often protected aspects of our identity; Jamaica is not unique in that

This 'morality' also impacts.. on sexual practice, and it's in keeping with certain bible scriptures ( colonizers favoured tool.. outside of torture and murder) why for many, homosexuality is not favoured, and for a long time oral sex for many Jamaicans, has been a big taboo (men).

So, Jamaica is a moral country?
I say otherwise. At least what I say is, despite the vast amount of churches, Jamaica is in reality, no more moral than anywhere else.

Besides.. for such a moral and Christian country, I find that the misogynistic lyrics coming from many dancehall artists can be quite disgusting
( yeah.... I said it - bite me)
I listen, I may even bop.. come on, you know I love my tunes.. but I don't take it in

besides.. these boys are getting younger! ( hope he's still in school )

(disclaimer - this video features gyrating girls.. and I realize now that some of you may not even bother to read the rest of the post.. hey.. read on!!)

Black Women. Already often stereotyped as - hyper sexed, exotic, erotic, aggressive, slack, angry, hostile, difficult, ( blah blah..lots of negatives I wont go on.. dare I get angry :))

You see the thing is.. when I hear that 48 women per hour ( I hope that was a journalistic error! ) in the Congo are raped everyday…and there's no world cry... I cant help but wonder if it's because those women are black, and.. thier attackers are black also

and that.. for some, raises no brow

Being sexually liberated and still owning that right to be treated with respect ( and being treated with respect, kindness, compassion, and care) is still a difficult balance isn't it.

Why?.. after all.. Jordan aka Katie Price, and many others have made a living as glamour models, and I don't think it has impacted on the general perception of white women at all

**
Katie Price, the smart cookie with those big.. bank accounts

Hmm..perhaps there is no link?

Doctor of words

You know what I thought this morning?.
With losing both Tony Benn and Bob Crow in the week.. and on hearing the passionate and favourable terms in which they've been spoken about, and remembered. Perhaps we are surrounded by closet socialists. and if we do have so many socialists around, then what on earth is going on...

Perhaps we are socialists at heart - capitalists by nature
or visa versa?

Perhaps we really have become slaves, scared, and are all cowards, and perhaps that really is the price we pay

**

On the news - the plane disappearance is beginning to look even more decidedly dodgy

Also on the news, it was mentioned that Louise Minchin (newsreader) was awarded an honourary doctorate degree

Question.. if you are a Dr ( Academic).. and someone takes ill on the train.. do you keep your mouth SHUT?.. or do as Ross from Friends, when Rachel's dad took ill

Scene - Hospital

Matchmaker matchmaker..

This week has flown by.
Busy and intense is how i'd describe it.
So It's do little Friday evening.

I watched a show called millionaire matchmaker. Very fun to watch.

At first I thought.. it must be difficult to find someone genuine if you're a millionaire. ( then I thought, well that can be tough anyway, millionaire or not). So at first I was skeptical, as some of the women laughed so hard at the guys bad jokes. But then I realized that all the women were very very beautiful looking, so in a way if the women are at all shallow for seeking cash benefits, the men are too for seeking the most beautiful looking women..

But then... I watched some more, and found myself quite enjoying it, and feeling less cynical.
Couples were mixed as in gay and straight, and ultimately.. both sides were simply seeking love and companionship, and they all had a good time.. even if there was no 'spark'

Seems there are lots of millionaire matchmakers ..

Well..every little helps.. after all, it can be tough for us millionaires to find the time .. :)

Late nights

)

When the well- being and happiness of another, becomes as important to you as your own
When your desire to love becomes more important than your desire to be right
When you can no longer pretend, and only truth will do
and your pride fades into insignificance

When all is quiet, and all is still
and your lovers embrace comforts you
When you know you're with the one..

Bob Crow

Very sad news to hear that the RMT Union Leader died suddenly in the early hours of the morning.
Bob Crow has been described today as one of the most successful Union Leaders, with membership growing significantly under his leadership. Many paying their respects today describe him as a true Working Class Hero.

I remember watching this interview a few weeks back on the Politics Show and thought... if a person needed someone in their corner... fighting for thier working conditions.. Bob Crow's the man.

The Politics Show with Andrew Neil and Bob Crow [click]

We need more warriors like that don't we
Whether you agreed with him or not.. he did what he believed in, and he did it with conviction

It's a huge loss, to his family and friends, to the union, to the members, to working people, and to politics.
Sure we may have felt the inconvenience of a tube strike, but he was fighting for the workers, fighting for their jobs, for their working conditions.. livelihoods
and that's pretty cool really

I shall become what no mind e’er conceived.
Oh, let me not exist! for Non-existence
Proclaims in organ tones, To Him we shall return.

Love is the ark appointed for the righteous,
Which annuls the danger and provides a way of escape.
Sell your cleverness and buy bewilderment.
Cleverness is mere opinion, bewilderment intuition.
Form and meaning are inestricably connected:
form derives from meaning, and meaning manifests itself as form.
Since the two are the outward and inward aspects of a single reality,
each is important in its own way. But for most people,
the danger lies in giving too much importance to form,
and not undertsnading that it derives its existence and
significance from meaning.

Experience shows that the spirit is nothing but
awareness. Whoever has greater awareness has a greater spirit.
The outward form of things passes away,
but the essence remains forever.
How long will you be besotted with the shape of the jug?
Cast aside the jug, and seek the water.
If you look too closely at the form, you miss the essence.
If you are wise, you will always pick out the pearl from the shell.
When someone is counting out
gold for you, don’t look at your hands,
or the gold. Look at the giver.

Your task is not to seek for love,
but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself
that you have built against it.
What you seek is seeking you.
You were born with wings, why prefer to crawl through life?
The wound is the place where the Light enters you.
Don’t grieve. Anything you lose comes round in another form.
When you do things from your soul,
you feel a river moving in you,
a joy'.

A little Saturday Sunshine

International Women's Day

Women are not a homogeneous group.
As with many of our identity markers, there is more difference within, that out
and yes..we can disappoint ourselves and others, and are just as capable as hating each other, and being duplicitous, as much as men (if not more)
but.. this picture's pretty sweet nonetheless

Yes folks.. its that day of the year

Happy International Womens Day!

I suspect that most abusers are still not known to the police. I suspect that most women who experience domestic violence suffer in silence
